 Kerry Unveils National Service PlanPresidential candidate John Kerry says his $10-million Citizen Patriot Fund would give Americans new ways to volunteer and support social entrepreneurs, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported Aug. 5. Under the proposal, as many as 100 Americans would receive grants of up to $100,000 each to develop new service programs. Grants would be awarded to those who have served in the military, Peace Corps, or AmeriCorps, and would require a dollar-for-dollar match from corporate donors. The National Peace Corps Association praised the plan, but the Heritage Foundation said the nation needs "more volunteerism, not more government programs." Kerry also called for increasing tenfold participation in Corporation for National and Community Service programs that provide educational aid. Source: www.jointogether.org |
