Skit aims to raise awareness of drug abuse

Heroin users spend an average of $150 on their addiction every day, according to My Addiction, a substance abuse awareness site. Not only can heroin usage result in diseases, such as Hepatitis C or HIV, but it can be deadly when injected in high doses. Substance abuse programs for youth are dedicated toward dissuading kids from heroin use, but one community has taken matters into its own hands.

The Wayne Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse in New Jersey recently partnered up with the Realty Tour, a group focused on keeping kids away from drugs. Approximately 15 middle school and high school students participated in a dramatic skit, emphasizing the negative effects of using drugs, such as heroin.

More than 170 people were in attendance, according to NorthJersey.com. The Realty Tour aimed to strike a chord with the parents in the audience and raise awareness of substance abuse that may be going on right in their own homes.

Nearly 29 percent of high school students say they can easily obtain drugs on school property, according to My Addiction. Rehabilitation facilities can help parents of children who are struggling with drug abuse.
