Ohio struggles to get grip on prescription drug addiction

A number of people have been arrested for the trafficking and use of prescription medications in Ohio, but law enforcement officials say that more needs to be done or the situation will spiral out of control. In 2013, the Purdue Pharma patent on OxyContin is set to expire, according to the Coshocton Tribune. If local prescription drug use does not drop by then, more people will be able to get their hands on new generic versions.

Between 2004 and 2008, CentralOhio.com found that more than 6,000 people died from accidental prescription drug overdoses. Pain-relieving opiates and heroin are becoming the most popular recreational drugs in the region.

Local task forces have been effective in taking offenders into custody within months, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has only made a small impact thus far. Ohio law enforcement officials say that the FBI can take up to 10 years to nab one or two clinics or physicians who over-prescribe mediation. For a state that is looking for a quick solution to opiate addiction, this is hardly enough. Cases of drug dependency will continue to cost taxpayers money until it is under control.

Drug addiction costs the U.S. more than $484 billion annually, according to the Department of Justice. Drug rehab centers can help individuals suffering from a dependency to prescription medication.
