More college students suffering from addiction, depression

The Screening for Mental Health (SMH) organization released statistics this week showing that college students, in particular, are more likely to suffer from depression. Mental illnesses can sometimes lead to substance abuse and drug addiction. Rehabilitation facilities and substance abuse treatment centers specialize in helping individuals suffering from these types of health problems.

The data, which was reported by SMH in light of the Mental Illness Awareness Week, shows that individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 are 17 percent more likely to have symptoms of depression compared to five years ago. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that through its research, it has found that one in 10 Americans are depressed.

Nearly 81 percent of the college students who took their own lives last year were unaware of their school's counseling centers, targeted at providing guidance and support.

Increased alcohol and drug use is considered to be one of the warning signs of suicide, in addition to depression and hopelessness. Individuals who feel that their loved ones may be suffering from mental illness and substance abuse are encouraged to look into rehabilitation facilities. Substance abuse treatment centers can give them the tools they need to overcome addiction.
