More Americans abusing prescription drugs

According to experts, approximately 7,000 Americans take a prescription drug for recreational purposes every day. Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem among adults and children alike. Addiction treatment centers can provide help to individuals who have become dependent on prescription drugs. However, as pills become more easy to obtain, the problem isn't expected to go away any time soon.

More parents are being advised to take the initiative to prevent prescription drug abuse in their own homes, according to ABC-7. Young adults, in particular, are diving into the prescription drug culture by grabbing everything they can get their hands on in their parents' cabinets.

"Seventy percent of those who misuse these products and abuse them get them from family or friends, usually for free, often from the family medicine cabinet," representative of the College of Pharmacy at Ohio State University Ken Hale told the news source.

More than 15 million Americans aged 12 or older abused prescription drugs in 2008, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Rehabilitation facilities will continue to play a crucial role in helping the growing number of addicts and their families in the future.
