Monongalia County to establish drug court for kids

Many communities attempt to tackle substance abuse problems with drug rehab programs for adults. However, one county is establishing a drug court to address the issues early by lending a helping hand to kids who are headed down the wrong path.

Recently, Monongalia County announced that it will begin offering a juvenile drug court to young individuals who find themselves in trouble with the law, according to WDTV-News. County circuit judge Phillip Gaujot believes that offering resources to kids may keep more people out of jail and prevent them from becoming addicts in the future.

Program director Angela Kauffman told the news source that one of the biggest components of the drug court will be involving the offenders' families. Without the support system of loved ones, substance abusers may revert back to bad habits despite completing the program.

Drug addiction costs the U.S. nearly $484 billion every year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Taxpayers are responsible for paying the costs to penalize individuals who engage in drug-related crimes. Drug rehab programs established by state officials may be able to reduce the number of incidents linked to illicit substances over time.
