Minnesota sees drop in cigarette usage

Many states create tobacco regulations in hope of making a difference in reducing the number of local smokers, but skepticism typically surrounds anti-smoking legislation. Minnesota instituted a number of anti-tobacco laws between 1999 and 2010, and despite years of opposition, new data show that it may finally be paying off.

A recent survey revealed that the state lowered its adult smoking rates from 22 percent in 1999 to 16 percent in 2010. Minnesota created a statewide smoke-free law, implemented high cigarette taxes and invested in anti-tobacco education to make a difference in the number of users, according to HealthDay News.

Cigarette sales in Minnesota dropped approximately 40 percent in between 1999 and 2010. The number of smokers who used 25 or more cigarettes a day decreased from 14 percent to 6 percent as well. Fewer adults also claimed to be exposed to second-hand smoke during this time period, HealthDay News reports.
