Jefferson County to institute additional family drug court

Addiction in families can not only put a strain on relationships between loved ones, but it can also result in child neglect. To tackle the growing problem in Jefferson County, Alabama, legislators plan to institute a new family drug court to help individuals get clean.

Last February, Jefferson County established its first family drug court for parents who had lost custody of their kids as a result of addiction, according to The Birmingham News. The 18-month program saw success, prompting legislators to create a new, intensive drug rehab program for more families seeking help.
Family drug court participants must admit to their crimes in order to enroll in the program.

Following completion, they may have the charges against them dropped if they are able to maintain their sobriety. Participants are also not arrested for their crimes. Additionally, they may be given another chance to regain custody of their children after successfully finishing the program.

More than 20 million Americans admitted to using illicit substances within a 30-day period in 2006, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Family Services. Drug rehab programs can help individuals detoxify and live healthier lives.
