DTAP program may help Pima County addicts

Drug addiction costs $484 billion every year in the U.S., according to Drug Addiction Support, a statistics site. Substance abuse treatment centers may help individuals detoxify, but many addicts find themselves in trouble with the law before they seek help.

In some communities, the price of punishing addicts with jail time and fines is staggering. Approximately one-third of the crimes committed in Pima County, Arizona, are related to drugs. To reduce this, the county recently announced that it plans to institute a drug treatment alternative to prison (DTAP) program, according to KGUN-9 News.

County attorney Barbara LaWall told the news source that the average recidivism rate for individuals who find themselves in prison is 60 percent. The rate in Brooklyn, New York has dropped to 24 percent since instituting a program similar to the one being created in Pima County.

Judge Jan Kearney believes that the DTAP program may be able to help individuals stay out of her courtroom. Offering addicts the option to come clean might increase the number of felons who recover and become valuable members of society.

Drugs account for nearly half of the crimes committed in the U.S., according to Drug Addiction Support. Rehabilitation facilities provide individuals with healthy lifestyle alternatives to substance abuse.
