Drug courts prove beneficial in New Jersey

In 2008, there were more than 4 million emergency room visits that were caused by illicit drug use, according to the Drug Abuse Warning Network. Using illegal substances can result in jail time, but more cities are instituting drug courts to help addicts recover. Similar to substance abuse treatment centers, drug courts provide addicts with the resources they need to detoxify.

A new report released by New Jersey courts shows that dedication to drug courts is paying off, according to Shore News Today. Data shows that individuals who have committed drug-related felonies have been more likely to land jobs once they complete the program and steer clear of more legal trouble. More than 4,000 probationers are working across the state to help addicts detoxify through 12-step programs.

"Since being in drug court I have achieved getting custody of my 4-year-old son back, maintaining employment for three years and a beautiful apartment; I also got my driver's license back," wrote Paula in a letter included in the report, the news source reports.

Between 10 and 22 percent of car accidents are drug related, according to Drug Addiction Support, a statistics site. Rehabilitation facilities and drug courts can help individuals detoxify and make healthier lifestyle choices.
