Delaware County receives grant for drug court

Drug courts are effective in reducing crime and giving addicts a second chance at life. However, a lack of funding can hinder the success of a drug rehab program over time. Recently, one drug court in Delaware County, Indiana received additional cash to make sure the community continues to benefit from the program in the future.

The Delaware County Forensic Diversion Program has received $215,000 in grant money from the Federal Bureau of Justice, according to The Star Press. It will repay the grant over the course of three years as it continues to fund the local drug court, which has seen great success. Specifically, officials want to focus on increasing the graduation rate of its participants.

At any given time, there are approximately 160 people enrolled in the drug court. Similar programs have become popular in other counties across the country because they are a cost-effective way of tackling local substance abuse. Taxpayer money is typically used to cover the cost of incarcerating offenders who often find themselves in trouble with the law for addiction again after their release.

More than 20 million Americans admitted to using illicit substances within a 30-day period in 2006, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Family Services. Drug rehab programs can help individuals detoxify over time.
