Open Hearts, Open Arms: A Non-Punitive Approach to Addiction Treatment and RecoveryBy Meghan Vivo Historically, addiction treatment has been a highly confrontational, punitive process designed to break down harmful defense mechanisms that were believed to accompany substance abuse disorders. For a period of time in the mid-20th century, addiction counselors believed drug addicts and alcoholics needed an “in-your-face” reality check complete with direct feedback, character indictments, and ultimatums. When large numbers of clients began leaving treatment early, relapsing, and falling further into the grip of addiction, treatment providers began to take notice. While a confrontational approach may help deter new drug and alcohol users, rehabilitation once an addiction has already taken hold requires a very different approach. Today’s premier drug rehab programs utilize a therapeutic approach marked by empathy, compassion, and positive regard for clients.
Addiction Professionals Who Go the Extra Mile
At The Landing, an exclusive 30-day private drug rehab facility for men in Newport Beach, California, the staff of addiction experts takes a non-punitive, non-confrontational approach to addiction treatment, which may explain the program’s high retention and success rates. “Everyone at The Landing truly opens their hearts to the men who seek treatment here,” says Kurt Greenbaum, The Landing’s gourmet chef who lives and works with men in recovery on a daily basis. “Whether a client wants to be here or not, whether he is committed to treatment or not, we love and support him until he can love himself.”
Although threats and character attacks make great dramatic television, at The Landing there is no yelling, threatening, or putting people down. In fact, residents at The Landing receive every type of support imaginable throughout the process of recovery. A facility that truly goes the extra mile for its clients, the staff visits incoming residents during detox, accompanies clients to community AA/NA meetings, coordinates doctor visits and court appointments, and takes interested clients to church or religious gatherings. Greenbaum, an avid surfer from Hawaii, even takes residents surfing on his day off.
“The reason we’re so good at what we do is because we develop real bonds here,” says Greenbaum. “We go the extra mile because we care. Whatever our clients need, our goal is to anticipate it and fulfill it.”
Meeting Clients Where They’re At
But the program’s nurturing approach does not mean that recovery at The Landing is easy. Addiction treatment is highly structured, and requires a lot of soul-searching and hard work. Though clients live together in one beautiful beachfront home, each one is at a different place in his recovery and has an individualized treatment plan designed solely for him. If a client needs more direction or specific feedback, he will receive it. He will also receive special assignments and exercises that are designed to give him his personal best chance at recovery.
“Recovery is never easy – it can be a painful, emotional process and can require people to take steps they don’t necessarily want to take,” says Greenbaum. “But we do everything in our power to make it a rewarding experience by creating an environment of peace and serenity, where every individual is treated like a unique human being.”
“We strive to meet clients wherever they are at,” adds David Parker, a case manager at The Landing. “Rather than impose our beliefs about addiction or a man’s past experiences, or label his emotions or experiences as good or bad, we take each client’s feelings and beliefs on face value. Whatever has led him to this point is very real and very destructive, and can only be resolved by addressing the situation as he experiences it.”
Embracing Family – New and Old
The environment at The Landing can best be described as a big family. Though most clients spend just 30-45 days at the rehab facility, they establish a wonderful camaraderie. Getting to know each other on a personal level through group sessions and activities like surfing, biking, and team sports, the residents become their own live-in support network, with many staying in contact with fellow residents and staff long after their stay ends.
The addiction counselors come to work because they love their jobs, feel passionately about recovery (many have personal experience in recovery themselves), and firmly believe residents can win their battle with addiction. “I love what I do, I do what I love, and I can’t imagine doing anything else,” says Parker. “Being part of watching people heal, families reunite, and lives transform, it’s indescribable. These are men in crisis who need an answer. I am grateful that it is my job to help them find it.”
The staff members not only get well-acquainted with the man in recovery but also his family and loved ones who are critical to his long-term success. “Recovery is all about rebuilding relationships,” notes Parker. “In most cases, years of addiction have taken a toll on marriages and families. No man can do it by himself, so in that sense family becomes as important as the individual.”
Because family is critically important, The Landing ensures that family members are actively involved in the recovery process and provides an intensive continuing care program for alumni and their families. Less than an hour after a man arrives at The Landing, the staff is on the phone with spouses, siblings, parents, and loved ones giving them the first of many updates that will occur weekly during his stay. Over the years, The Landing has built a database of former clients, who staff members call to check up on and coordinate aftercare support.

What is Amphetamine Addiction?
Viewed in some circles as the less-threatening "little brother" of the dangerous and highly addictive crystal meth, amphetamine remains a significant threat to the adolescents and adults who use the drug in misguided attempts to fight off fatigue, enhance concentration, or gain a competitive edge in an athletic event.
